Girls Lacrosse wins State Championship 16-9 over South Lyon

The Rams came ready to play and quickly opened a 2-0 lead on the defending state champs, South Lyon. Senior Brooke Gordon scored two of her 6 goals to get the Rams started. South Lyon would respond to close the gap to 2-1. The Rams would capitalize on a fast break. Ava Wekenman would feed Jordyn Coretti who threw a nice low sidearm shot in between the goalie's legs to put the Rams back up two 3-1. South Lyon won the ensuing draw control and quickly had an answer to draw back within one goal 3-2. The Rams were determined and once again had an answer when Avery Maag beat the goalie to put the Rams up 4-2. After winning the draw, the Rams worked the ball around and Jordyn Coretti found Brooke Gordon, who scored her 3rd goal of the first quarter to bump the lead to 5-2. The Rams kept riding the momentum. Avery Maag would find the back of the net again to increase the lead 6-2 Rams just before the end of the 1st Quarter. Kiah Kruisenga would get the Rams going in the 2nd quarter when she scored her first of the game to increase the lead to 7-2 Rams. After the Rams received a non releasable yellow card, South Lyon United would capitalize and score two unanswered goals to tighten the game a little 7-4 Rams. Gordon would get the Rams back on track once back to even strength scoring her 4th goal of the game and push the lead back to four goals, 8-4. South Lyon was not going to go easy and they once again scored two goals to get the game back to 8-6. Senior Brooke Gordon, showing her senior leadership, came up big again scoring her 5th goal just before half time, sending the Rams into the half with a three goal lead, 9-6. Coming out of half time South Lyon scored to cut the deficit to two 9-7. The Rams responded and Ava Wekenman would score her first to put the Rams up 10-7. Both teams would trade goals with Ella Larva scoring for the Rams. The Rams would enter the 4th quarter up three, 11-8. The Rams came out on fire in the 4th quarter and would score four unanswered goals to increase the lead to 16-8. The Rams goals were scored by Ella Larva, Avery Maag and 2 by Ava Wekenman. South Lyon would score with 54 seconds left in the game to close it 16-9 before the Rams would run out the clock. Sophomore Goalie Mia Mabry had an amazing game with 12 saves. The defense was stellar. Defenders Lyla Vogt, Payten Davis, Ella Termaat and Kyla Moore were able to shut down South Lyon's high powered offense. This game was an outstanding team win and the Rams played strong on both ends of the field securing the programs 10th State Title.
