ROCKFORD ATHLETICS I HOME OF THE RAMS

The Rockford Boys Varsity Tennis team is off and running, and this year’s Rams are bringing a new look to the court. Of the 16 players on the varsity roster, 11 are new to the varsity team. But make no mistake, this team is not rebuilding. They are refueling. Although there are plenty of new faces on the varsity roster, these players are far from inexperienced. Many of them have spent the past three years in the Rockford tennis program, battling on the JV level and learning what it means to compete with the expectations and standards of Rockford Tennis. They have been battle-tested, they know what is expected of them, and now they are ready for their opportunity to step into the spotlight. Leading the Rams this season are returning varsity players Alex Moore at #1 singles, Broderik Gee at #2 singles, Noah Clark at #4 singles, Jayden Fudge at #1 doubles, and Julian Scott at #5 doubles. These returning players will provide valuable experience and leadership as the young Rams navigate one of the most challenging schedules in the state. And the Rams wasted no time putting themselves in uncomfortable situations. Rockford opened the season by throwing themselves directly into the fire against three outstanding programs at the Novi, Clarkston and Saline tournament. Both Novi and Clarkston entered the event as Top 10 teams in the state, while Saline has established itself as a consistent state tournament contender. The Rams finished third with nine points, falling to Novi and Clarkston but pulling off an impressive upset over Saline. Next came the 4th Annual East vs. West Showdown, where Rockford joined forces with West Ottawa and Hudsonville to take on Northville, Detroit Catholic Central and Rochester. The Rams once again embraced the challenge, finishing 2-1 on the day. Rockford picked up victories over Northville and Rochester but came up short against a talented Detroit Catholic Central squad. The Rams then faced their first true dual match of the season against perennial tennis powerhouse East Grand Rapids. While Rockford may lack some of the varsity experience of their opponent, EGR brought a roster loaded with experience, including 11 seniors who have seen just about everything a high school tennis court can throw at them. That experience showed as East Grand Rapids defeated the Rams 8-1. For a young team, it has certainly been a whirlwind of a start. But the Rams aren't discouraged. In fact, they are excited. This team has embraced a mindset of “seeking discomfort.” They understand that growth doesn't happen by staying comfortable. The players know that the most meaningful accomplishments often lie just beyond the point where things become difficult, uncertain and uncomfortable. And that is exactly where this group wants to be. The Rams have put in the work all offseason. They have trained, competed, battled and prepared themselves for the opportunity to represent Rockford Tennis. Now they are getting the chance to test everything they have learned against some of the toughest competition in Michigan and eventually against the always-tough OK Red Conference. There will be bumps along the way. There will be tough opponents. There will be matches where experience matters. But this group isn't afraid of any of it. They are seeking discomfort. They are embracing the challenge. And they are ready to find out just how good they can become. The season is young, and there is a lot of tennis still to be played. The Rams are optimistic about what lies ahead and excited to continue growing together. This isn't a rebuilding year. It's a refueling year. And the Rams are ready to put it all on the line.
