After a gauntlet of tough competition to begin the season, the Rockford Varsity Tennis team went back to work this week. There were no shortcuts. The Rams spent the week making small tweaks, refining their games and reworking the details that will allow them to play the Ram Way. The coaching staff has installed a plan, and the players are buying in. Practices have been intense, demanding and competitive, and every day the Rams are being pushed to new heights. More importantly, growth is happening. The coaches are challenging these players to push themselves through situations that aren't always comfortable or easy on the tennis court. The goal isn't simply to win matches. It is to develop players who can respond when things don't go their way, stay composed under pressure and continue competing when the situation gets difficult. On Tuesday, the Rams finally got their first opportunity to see some of that work in action as they took on Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The result was a 10-0 Rockford sweep, but the score doesn't tell the entire story. It wasn't perfect. It wasn't always great and not many tennis matches are. Instead, it was a work in progress. It was about taking baby steps and moving in the right direction. The Rams did a lot of good things on the court. They applied things they had worked on throughout the week, found success and, most importantly, showed signs that the changes being made in practice are beginning to translate into match play. That is the direction this team needs to go. One of the biggest highlights of the night came at #2 singles, where Broderik Gee found himself in a battle that demanded everything he had. Down 1-5 in the third-set tiebreaker, Gee could have easily let the match slip away. Instead, he trusted his shots when it mattered most and battled his way all the way back. Gee eventually won the tiebreaker 12-10, gutting out an impressive comeback victory. That type of fight is exactly what the Rams are looking for. At #4 doubles, Chase Dzirbowicz and Wenji Lastfogel also showed the type of response the coaching staff wants to see. After a difficult and hard-fought opening set, the pair won the first set 7-6(5) before settling in and taking control in the second, winning 6-1. The first set wasn't easy. There were moments of frustration and adversity, but instead of allowing those struggles to carry over, Dzirbowicz and Lastfogel buckled down, locked in and played decisive tennis in the second set. That ability to reset after a difficult first set is an important part of becoming a better team. The final match of the night provided another great example. At #1 doubles, Jayden Fudge and Ryan Stark found themselves down 0-3 in the second set. Rather than allowing the deficit to dictate the rest of the match, the Rams stayed focused, played one point at a time and slowly worked their way back into the match. They didn't panic. They competed. Fudge and Stark eventually turned the momentum around and closed out the second set 7-5, finishing the night with another important comeback. The Rams received strong performances across the lineup, completing the 10-0 sweep with the following results: #1 Singles: 6-0, 6-2 #2 Singles: Broderik Gee wins third-set tiebreaker 12-10 after trailing 1-5 #3 Singles: 6-2, 6-2 #4 Singles: 6-2, 6-0 #1 Doubles: Jayden Fudge / Ryan Stark, 7-5 in the second set #2 Doubles: 6-0, 6-3 #3 Doubles: 6-3, 6-2 #4 Doubles: Chase Dzirbowicz / Wenji Lastfogel, 7-6(5), 6-1 #5 Doubles: 6-1, 6-1 #6 Doubles: 6-0, 6-1 While a 10-0 victory is certainly something to celebrate, the Rams understand that the real value of this match was found in the moments between the points, the comebacks, the adjustments, the composure and the willingness to trust the work they have been putting in. This team is learning. They are being challenged. They are being pushed outside of their comfort zones. Tuesday wasn't about proving that the Rams have everything figured out. Far from it. It was about seeing the first signs that the work is beginning to take hold. Baby steps. Small improvements. Trusting the process. That is how this team will continue to grow. The Rams aren't looking for perfection. They are looking for progress. And on this night against Catholic Central, they took another step in the right direction. Keep working. Keep pushing.
