The stage was set, and the Rockford Rams knew exactly what was at stake. The final OK Red dual match of the regular season brought Hudsonville to town, and this was much more than just another match on the schedule. Hudsonville is always a talented program and consistently finds itself near the top half of the OK Red standings. For the Rams, there were several important boxes that needed to be checked. First, Rockford needed to take care of business against a very good Hudsonville team if they wanted to finish second in the OK Red dual standings behind West Ottawa. Second, a victory would put the Rams in position to chase the conference championship at next week's OK Red Conference Tournament. And third, every individual match mattered. Every match during the season helps determine seeding for the conference tournament. Every flight matters. Every set matters. There is no room for a lapse that could drop a player or doubles team down the seedings and make the road to the finals that much more difficult. The Rams checked all three boxes with an impressive 8-1 victory over Hudsonville. But don't let the 8-1 score fool you. This match was much closer than the final score indicated. Rockford jumped out to a strong start, with Broderik Gee taking care of business at No. 2 singles, Gavin Wurm earning a convincing win at No. 3 singles, and Jayden Fudge and Ryan Stark controlling No. 1 doubles. Seth Bearly and Stephen Chien also picked up a straight-set victory at No. 3 doubles, while Chase Dzibowicz and Ethan Lund dominated No. 5 doubles. Then came the gut check. The final three matches on the courts were all three-set battles. That means this match could have looked very different on the scoreboard. Instead of 8-1, it could have been 5-4. The Rams refused to let that happen. Noah Clark found himself down after dropping the opening set at No. 4 singles, but battled back to win the second set before taking control of the third, finishing with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Brady Gauthier and Bridger Wildern won the opening set 6-3, dropped the second 4-6, and then dug deep to win the deciding set 7-5. At No. 4 doubles, Wenji Lastfogel and Julian Scott faced an even bigger challenge. After losing the first set 1-6, the Rams duo completely flipped the match, winning the second set 6-0 before grinding out a 7-5 third-set victory. Those were not just tennis matches. Those were moments. Those were opportunities to show toughness, composure and belief when things weren't going their way. And the Rams answered. Alex Moore battled at No. 1 singles against Hudsonville's Gavin Luchies, but Hudsonville earned the lone team victory, 6-2, 6-1. When the final ball was struck, Rockford had an 8-1 victory and, more importantly, had put themselves exactly where they wanted to be heading into the conference tournament. Next Saturday, October 3, the OK Red Conference Tournament comes to Rockford. Play begins at 8:30 a.m., and everything the Rams have worked for during the dual season now leads to this day. The Rams are in position to compete for the conference championship. The Rams will need to play with confidence. They will need to remain positive when adversity shows up. They will need to believe in their shots and, most importantly, they will need to come up with those shots when the pressure is at its highest. That's what tournament tennis is all about. There will be long rallies. There will be momentum swings. There will be missed opportunities. There will be moments when players have to decide whether they are going to let adversity control them or whether they are going to control what they can control. This team has been preparing for those moments all season. The dual season is over. Now the real battle begins. October 3. 8:30 a.m. Rockford High School. The stage is set.
